korean artist Kim Ye-rim’s Ceramic Goods

At the Seoul Illustration Korea Fair, held from the 23rd to the 26th of last month at COEX B2 Hall, media outlet Shovel sat down with artist Kim Ye-rim to discuss her burgeoning career and unique artistic vision.

artist Kim, a rising figure in the Korean art scene, has successfully carved out a niche by blending the disciplined aesthetic of traditional Oriental painting with the playful appeal of modern character design.

Her practice is defined by a strategic integration of research and development, creative production, and marketing, all aimed at transforming ceramic art from mere decoration into functional, everyday goods.

The genesis of her signature character, "ingki" emerged from a paradoxical moment of both surrender and rebirth.

Facing the harsh realities of the Korean art market after majoring in Oriental painting, Kim found inspiration in the hardened, leftover ink on her inkstone.

Rather than discarding the dried material, she reimagined it as a living entity, giving birth to a character that serves as both her alter ego and a modern reinterpretation of traditional ink-and-wash sensibilities.

This pivot allowed her to sustain her life as an artist while offering a fresh perspective on a centuries-old medium.

Choosing ceramics as her primary vehicle was a deliberate decision rooted in the material’s ability to capture the clean, minimalist beauty of Oriental art.

Influenced by her mother, who is also a ceramicist, Kim prioritizes "utility" above all else, driven by a desire for her work to be touched and used in daily life rather than just viewed from a distance.

Her preference for matte glazes reflects a commitment to a sophisticated, understated elegance that resists fleeting trends.

This philosophy has earned her a diverse following that spans from young children and millennial newlyweds to the older generation.

In an era where generative AI models like ChatGPT and Gemini are reshaping the creative landscape, Kim remains confident in the irreplaceable value of human touch.

While she has experimented with AI to replicate her style, she found that technology cannot grasp the spontaneous sketches or the subtle, minute details born from the movement of the hand.

To Kim, the essence of art lies in the joy of the process itself.

Although the limitations of manual labor present challenges in terms of production volume, she hopes for a shift in consumer perception that values the time and sincerity embedded within each handmade piece.

Looking toward the future, Kim’s ambitions extend far beyond domestic borders, with plans for a pop-up store in Taiwan and participation in global art fairs.

Drawing inspiration from the world-renowned French artist Jean Jullien, she aims to expand the "Ingki" intellectual property into various lifestyle collaborations, including apparel and functional items like umbrellas.

Having spent the last five years navigating the delicate balance between creative passion and pragmatic business sense, Kim views her current trajectory as just the beginning of a long ascent.

Through her matte-finished ceramics, she continues to deliver a message of resilience and hope, proving that even a dried piece of ink can be reborn into something enduring and profound.
