LURF GALLERY presents Conveniently Spiritual, a solo exhibition by Tadashi Umemoto, hosted on the gallery's first floor from August 7 through September 13, 2026.
Umemoto crafts paintings derived from his immediate surroundings, turning to familiar figures and everyday scenes as raw material for his canvas. Rather than merely recording reality as it appears, he interrogates the subtle sense of discomfort, cognitive dissonance, and inexplicable sensations that emerge through the very act of painting.
The exhibition title, Conveniently Spiritual, articulates the messy human attitude of navigating life by selectively believing, doubting, ignoring, obsessing over, or rationalizing the things around us. It captures the fluctuating spectrum of coping mechanisms essential for daily survival.
Serving as Umemoto’s first solo showcase since completing his graduate studies, this exhibition brings together a compelling body of work born from his past experiences and current artistic inquiries.
In his artist statement, Umemoto frames modern existence through a series of vivid personal paradoxes, describing a life caught between animal instincts and robot-like habits.
He eats fast food three times a week while trying to stay healthy, savors cigarettes while wishing for longevity, wears fast fashion while obsessing over style, and ignores endless unread messages while genuinely loving human connection.

He fears fictional ghosts despite claiming complete disbelief and finds himself shaped entirely by received influences while striving to remain authentically himself.
Through these daily hypocrisies and internal tugs-of-war, Umemoto illustrates how we reconcile conflicting rules, desires, and beliefs to make sense of our world.
The exhibition is held with the cooperation of HIRO OKAMOTO and welcomes visitors to engage with Umemoto's thought-provoking visual landscape in Tokyo.
