Hee Seung SUNG’s paintings are composed of recurring dots, luminous passages, and layered chromatic traces that may recall constellations or cosmic space.

 Rather than functioning as representations, however, these elements operate as sensorial imprints—accumulations of perception and duration. 

Her canvases do not describe a fixed location; they register the act of sustained looking, capturing time as it settles onto the painted surface.

Eternal Becoming articulates an ongoing process of forming a visual language that resists closure. 

The work does not emphasize completion or finality, but instead foregrounds the continuous emergence of form—moments in which shapes are generated, dissolve, and are set in motion again.

 Becoming, in this sense, is perpetual rather than resolved.

Born in Busan in 1977, Hee Seung SUNG currently lives and works between Seoul and New York.

 She earned her BFA and MFA in Painting from the College of Fine Arts at Hongik University, before completing an MA in Studio Art and Media Art at New York University in 2005.

 In 2015, she completed doctoral coursework at Goldsmiths, University of London, and received her PhD in Fine Arts from Kookmin University in 2021.

SUNG has presented numerous solo exhibitions, including Eternal Becoming (2026, Hakgojae, Seoul); Engraving the Stars (2025, Youngeun Museum of Contemporary Art, Gwangju); From Performance to Stardust: Hee Seung SUNG’s Art Life (2023, Zaha Museum, Seoul); and a series of Universe_( ) exhibitions in 2021 at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, Gyeonggi Arts Center, and Hakgojae Art Center.

Her work has also been featured in major group exhibitions such as A4 Action 2025: Revolution of Light (2025, National Assembly Members’ Office Building, Seoul); Sicheon Yeomin (2024, Gwangju Museum of Art); Artist of the Year (2022, Saatchi Art, London); Life of an Artist (2021, G Gallery, Hiroshima); and earlier exhibitions at institutions including the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid, the Venice Biennale, and the Korean Cultural Centers in New York and Beijing.

Her works are held in public and private collections, including the Reina Sofía Museum (Madrid), Gyeonggi Arts Center, Youngeun Museum of Contemporary Art, Zaha Museum, Samsung Foundation of Culture, Yonsei University, and Deutsche Bank (London).
