Bernadette Despujols, Solera con domino, 2025 (101.6 x 76.2 cm).

Venezuelan multimedia artist Bernadette Despujols (b. 1986, Barquisimeto) constructs a poignant practice centered on intimacy, feminine embodiment, and the evolving roles of women across generations.

Moving fluidly between personal narrative and broader socio-cultural discourse, her paintings and sculptures offer a multifaceted lens on female identity, confronting historical paradigms and objectified representations of the body through the deeply personal experiences of mothers, daughters, grandmothers, and friends.

Despujols’s approach to painting is fundamentally sculptural and tactile.

Working on thickly gessoed grounds, she builds dense layers of paint before using palette knives to carve fine incisions into the canvas.

This subtractive scraping technique infuses her surfaces with physical tension and movement, extending the visual rhythm beyond traditional two-dimensional boundaries.

Through this dynamic manipulation of form and raw material, her figures embody both vulnerability and structural presence.

Her multidisciplinary foundation spans fine arts and architecture. Despujols completed an MFA in Visual Arts at the California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles in 2010, following architectural and artistic training at the Universidad Central de Venezuela and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

(Green Family Foundation, Miami, 2022).

Her works are included in prominent permanent collections, including the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) Miami and El Espacio 23 in Florida.

The artist currently maintains her practice between Miami, Florida, and Brooklyn, New York.
