SunGallery presents Where Time Settles into Light, a landmark solo exhibition by contemporary artist Jian Yoo (born 1982), on view from June 17 to July 21, 2026.
Marking her highly anticipated solo debut with the institution following a successful collaboration at Abu Dhabi Art, the showcase brings together twenty extraordinary works.
The exhibition centers on newly created masterpieces painstakingly built from countless, meticulously assembled fragments of mother-of-pearl, offering a comprehensive look into Yoo’s ongoing philosophical exploration of light, time, and human emotion.
The exhibition title beautifully captures her dedication to transforming invisible, fleeting forces into permanent physical structures.
For Yoo, raw emotion acts as the most delicate footprint of human existence and an intimate archive of time itself.

Instead of directly copying these abstract concepts onto the canvas, she translates them into sensory fields of perception, inviting the public to experience them through a purely tactile and visual engagement.
Throughout the gallery space, the densely layered surfaces of mother-of-pearl pulse with an extraordinary energy, balancing states of total stillness with sudden movement, and deep condensation with infinite expansion.
As viewers navigate the exhibition and encounter the shifting angles of light, the iridescent surfaces continuously generate entirely new visual realities.
Light, within Yoo’s lexicon, ceases to be a passive environmental element; instead, it operates as a vibrant language through which the silent rhythms of time and emotional memory become physically perceptible.
The dynamic motion running through the collection directly mirrors the natural phenomena suggested by her series titles, such as WAVE and ETERNAL FLOW.
At certain moments, the rhythmic configurations mimic the breaking of ocean waves and swirling aquatic currents; at others, they expand outward to evoke grand cosmic events, resembling black holes, distant stars, and expanding galaxies.
The natural, kaleidoscopic colors inherent to the mother-of-pearl—cultivated inside the sea over immense periods—embody both the biological timescale of nature and the timelessness of our universe.
Beyond her deep conceptual framing, Jian Yoo is widely celebrated for single-handedly expanding the boundaries of traditional Korean mother-of-pearl craftsmanship into a boundary-pushing, contemporary visual language.
This innovative approach led her to become the first Korean creator selected for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars’ prestigious global initiative Inspiring Greatness, and her masterworks are permanently housed at the luxurious Cartier Maison Cheongdam.
Her unique ability to bridge historic heritage with ultra-modern luxury has sparked high-profile collaborations with an elite roster of international luxury institutions, including Van Cleef & Arpels, FRED (LVMH), Chanel, Christian Dior, Blancpain, and Panerai.
Concurrently, she has completed monumental corporate commissions for South Korea's premier entities, such as Genesis, KIA, and Korean Air.
